What does every entrepreneur need to be in business? Clients – pure and simple.

No business exists in a vacuum and you need people to serve. A strong client base turns an idea into a business and that is the dream of every entrepreneur.

This is one of those personal, revealing articles…consider yourself warned!

The last year and a half has been a wild ride. For those readers that haven’t been following, I started a new business and really stepped into leadership. I took my business from $0 to over $300k in the first year and am on track to triple that in my second year. I have my first book being published with McGraw-Hill and am taking the next steps in developing a TV show. For those readers that have been following, well, you’ve made the journey with me!

Assumptions are made when you watch someone make these leaps in business. Since I created the Character Code® System, I could tell you exactly what assumptions are made by each person – LOL! Typical thoughts are, “She had it easy,” “She doesn’t have the struggles I have,” “She’s just lucky,” “She must have had a lot of help” or “I could never do this,” “I’m not good enough,” “I’m not as talented as her” or some other negating term that keeps you from reaching for your dream.

What I know from making this journey is that there is a lot more than just the actual work going on. Don’t get me wrong, there was business to be done every step of the way. This doesn’t happen by magic. Some days were easy and some were really hard.

What I mean by “a lot more” is the journey each entrepreneur goes through as they grow. When you strip away all the skills, techniques and to-do lists what it really boils down to is that it is an “inside job.” The ultimate change is in the entrepreneur themselves. That’s the blessing and the challenge.

It’s a bold move to step up to this challenge. It means taking full ownership for your life, your purpose, your destiny, your impact, your legacy, your feelings…luckily business can be your teacher and these lessons come over time – they don’t need to all be learned tomorrow!

I’ve often told my clients to use whatever motivation you have to move you forward. Use it without judgment, without reservation, because if it keeps you on course it is a valuable tool. Then it will shift, it will release its hold on you and a new motivation will appear. You will have healed that old wound.

I’ll give you a personal example. When I started my business I was in a really low space. I had struggled for years through really terrible battles with my ex-husband, I suffered a serious head injury and was on disability, I had excessive debt and not a penny to my name. I was (and am) a single mom and all I really cared about was providing a quality life for my daughter. So to have sunk this low in my life was personally devastating.

The amount of shame, blame, self-loathing and stifled pain I felt at that time was eating me up alive. I had become a shell of who I was and didn’t trust anyone, was always waiting for the next bad thing to happen, was constantly on guard, on high-alert, defensive, rigid and wore a suit of “armor” around me that  kept me from ever letting anyone really close.

Not the frame-of-mind one would expect when starting a new business, right?

Sometimes the desire for it to be “different” without even knowing the details of what, how or when is simply enough to take that first step…

In the beginning I had to heal the shame and start letting go of the blame for the state my life was in. That has been an ongoing process of peeling back the layers and forgiving myself for not being perfect, not always making the right decisions and ultimately for being human. Sounds like it should be obvious, but it is a work-in-progress for many Class President Character Codes!

I mentioned early letting any motivation move you into action – without judgment. This was especially helpful for me. At times I was motivated by “proving” something to my ex, to my family, to my daughter…

Each time I did that it would heal that need. The best part of allowing that in and not judging it is on the other side, you realize the person or thing that you were “proving yourself to” simply does not care. They love you (or don’t) based on who you are and who they are. There is nothing to prove. To say that wasn’t enough for me to heal it  – I had to take it on and move through it to really let it go.

Then there is proving your worth and value to yourself. This can be a great motivator in your business and I say “Yes, accept that challenge!”

On the other side you realize you are enough, you are whole and you have nothing to prove to yourself. It is a very interesting place. I describe it as the space between not having to build yourself up or defend against some outside force. The space of not being in battle – just being.

It took me a while to get there…and it is still a work-in-progress.

What does it feel like? It feels freeing. It feels like all is well and all is possible.

What is the ultimate motivator?

The clients that you serve, your greater purpose and the message you have to share with the world. That is what carries you through it all and that is your heroic journey.

I know I couldn’t have made it here without taking the chance, without accepting some risk, without wanting a better life, without building the business. There isn’t much room for self-reflection when you are in survival-mode, reacting to life’s constant demands. We need breathing room in order to rest, contemplate and then jump to next level of growth along our journey.

I believe the hardest part for me wasn’t the actual work. Don’t get me wrong – work was involved! The most challenging part I’ve experienced is making that mental, emotional and spiritual shift from lack to abundance. From fear to love. From pain to possibility.

I’m so glad I’m on this journey. I’m so grateful to have my business provide these incredible life learnings and opportunity. I’m so grateful to every client that has joined me along the way.

I know that many of you reading this are also in a place of pain. You may be afraid to start this journey or you may be on it and wondering, “Is it really for you?”

I tell you from the bottom of my heart, if I can do it, YOU can too!

Those that know the Character Code System know that most Class Presidents keep their feelings hidden – so it isn’t often I write articles like this. I do get nervous, scared and worried about how it will be received. After all, I want to do things “right” and this article is already very, very long…and I’m feeling a little vulnerable.

But what I care about more is helping people out of that space I was in and guiding them along this journey.

Business has been my biggest teacher and so that is my medium. My audience is the entrepreneur and I teach them how to build a business based on client attraction. A business that is based on who they are at their core so they can live their dream and inspire others.

I’m doing something new in just a few days. Something I’m excited and nervous about, so that must mean it is good! I’m sharing the Character Code System in a LIVE webinar for the first time, for free -  to a worldwide audience! I’m sharing some of my best client attraction secrets. I’m putting it “out there” and sharing how I’ve made it so others can do the same.

As you know, Oprah grew up with tremendous hardship and suffering, but she made a decision not to be held down by her past.  She surrounded herself with supportive people and has become one of the most powerful and famous women on the planet.

Those who have the Oprah Money Code likewise grew up with tremendous challenges and hardship, which have had a huge impact on how they carry themselves as adults.

Then let me show you how to get a grip on being a successful, wealthy person! In this blog about my Money Codes, I’ll tell you about the layers of the money code.  

We absorb everything in layers, so we need to look at your first memories about money. This first layer is so defining to us as adults because we’re like little blank canvases as children. Sure, that first splash of paint can be covered up, but it’s always going to be there, defining how we relate to money.

Think about your first memories surrounding money.Were they good or bad? You’ll soon see those first memories have a bearing on how you relate to money now.

The second layer is your parents’ Money Code. What did you hear from them on a regular basis regarding money? Was there tension in the house due to finances? Did they fight about money? Or maybe they didn’t even talk about money. Your parents’ Money Code has a huge impact on how you think about money today and how many possibilities you think you have in creating money.

The environment you grew up in is the third layer of the Money Code. What did your friends, neighbors, and peers think about money? What were you taught about money in school? Did you have more things than your friends, or less? How your peers and others related to your income status caused you to have a certain amount of tension around money. How much of that tension did you grow up with?

The fourth layer is your life lesson. What have been your experiences with money so far? Everyone has a life lesson around money – whether they lost it all, have financial challenges, or always have money. I can help you learn what your money life lesson is so that when you get it, the possibilities for earning money become endless!
